Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay: The Case for California Elegance

Chardonnay, Sonoma-Cutrer

Chardonnay is the most polarizing white wine in America. People either love it or declare they would never drink it. Almost always, the people who say they hate Chardonnay have only experienced the over-oaked, buttery style that dominated California winemaking in the 1990s.

The Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay from Russian River Valley is the wine that changes minds.

A Different Approach

Sonoma-Cutrer is located in the Russian River Valley, one of the coolest regions in Sonoma County. The fog rolls in from the Pacific every morning, keeping temperatures down and allowing the grapes to ripen slowly. Slow ripening means more complexity, more nuance, and better acidity.

The wine is barrel-fermented, but the oak is handled with a light touch. You get hints of vanilla and a subtle creaminess, but the fruit is never buried. Pear, green apple, and a delicate floral quality come through clearly. The finish is clean and refreshing, not heavy or cloying.

At Our Table

This is one of our most popular pours, and for good reason. It pairs exceptionally well with the Crab Cakes, where the wine's creamy texture complements the lemon beurre blanc while its acidity keeps the richness of the jumbo lump crab in check.

It is also excellent with the Hot Smoked Salmon. The wine's fruit plays off the salmon's natural oils, and the Chardonnay's subtle oak echo the smokiness of the fish. The avocado and cilantro relish on the salmon find an easy partner in the wine's gentle creaminess.

For guests who claim they do not like Chardonnay, we suggest starting here. It has converted more skeptics than any other wine on our list. At $15 a glass, it is an accessible invitation to reconsider a grape variety that deserves better than its reputation.

Give Chardonnay another chance. The Russian River Valley is waiting.
